Uganda 2016 and 2017

In 2016, a gift from the Franciscan Mission Association helped complete the installation of stained glass windows in the newly-built St. Francis of Assisi church in Matugga, Uganda. Through the generosity of its friends and benefactors, the FMA was able to help grow the faith and strengthen the Church in Africa.

The new church building in Matugga, Uganda was opened in 2014, but without the funds to put stained glass in the windows, liturgy had to begin with parishioners exposed to the elements.

Another view of St. Francis of Assisi church without windows. How great is the faith of the community of St. Francis to begin worshipping the Lord in the unfinished church!

In 2017, a gift from the Franciscan Mission Association helped support the formation program of the Franciscan Friars Conventual in Uganda. From promotion and advertising to hosting “come and see” weekends for prospective postulatants, to receiving novices and solemenly professed friars, through to priestly ordination for some, the process of education and formation into Franciscan religious life is challenging. With the financial support of the Franciscan Mission Association, educating the 16 young men who are in the formation program this year has been made a little easier. With your prayers and generous donations, we will continue to help the Franciscans in Uganda strengthen the Order and strengthen the Church.

In 2012, the Uganda mission’s first native vocation, friar Steven Lumbuye, was invested with gray habit of the Franciscan Friars Conventual.

Through the generosity of the friends and benefactors of the FMA, a new class of African novices begin their lives as Franciscan Friars in 2017.
